Potty Training Your Whoodle Puppy

roses.jpg (46279 bytes)

A young puppy needs to be carried outside every two hours. Puppies will not use the bathroom in their crates if they can avoid it. Do not punish a puppy if it soils its crate.  Their bladders are small.  As the puppy grows, you will be able to leave it in its crate for longer intervals.

If you need to leave your puppy at home alone all day while you are at work, you should give him more space than the crate and leave plenty of water and puppy food.  A laundry room or bathroom are great places to leave your puppy during the day.  Make sure that the room is puppy safe - no wires, no cleaning chemicals, no laundry detergent, no toilet paper or trash within reach of the puppy.  I recommend putting down puppy potty training pads and then switching to newspaper once the puppy has learned where to potty.

It is important to put your puppy in its crate whenever you are not playing with it or watching it.  Puppies feel free to potty anywhere when they are outside their crate.  They don’t know the difference between the grass and your living room carpet.  They do know that they live in their crate and their natural instinct is not to soil it.

The other reason to keep your puppy in its crate is for the puppies own safety.  Teething puppies chew on everything!!!  Not only could you lose your favorite pair of shoes, but you could lose your puppy if it chews on an electrical wire.  I took some awesome photos to send at the request of the producers of Dog 101 that is shown on the Animal Planet network.  I laid in the grass and the mulch for over an hour and took over 200 photos.  My wonderful husband Phil had kindly laid out the camera cable for me to download the pictures to my computer.  After taking a shower to get the grass and mulch off of me I was terribly disappointed to find the puppies had pulled the cable off of the bedside table and chewed it into two pieces.  The photos stayed on our camera for a week while we waited for a new cable.  Bummer.
